Why is my wireless so slow?
Slow Wi-Fi can be caused by several factors including interference from other devices, outdated router firmware, or an overloaded network. Other possibilities include weak signal strength due to distance from the router or physical obstructions like walls and furniture. We can help by optimising your router settings, updating firmware, and assessing whether you need a stronger router, wireless extender, mesh solution or home enterprise access points.
What’s causing my Wi-Fi to drop out frequently?
Frequent dropouts can be caused by interference from other wireless devices (such as microwaves or congestion in your local area - i.e. apartment complexes), weak router signal strength, router overheating, or issues with your Internet Service Provider (ISP) or your internal cabling. Our technicians can diagnose the problem by testing your ONT and router, signal strength, assessing for interference, and checking your router’s performance. We’ll then apply the necessary fixes or suggest an upgrade if required.
How much does a wireless tech cost in Paraparaumu?
We charge a minimum of $115 for residential and $125+gst for business/commercial Callouts. Our 15 minute fast fix fee applies to both residential and business/commercial clients. On weekends there is a $50 callout fee. From 8pm - 8am and on public holidays we have a double rate surcharge for our 24/7 service.
Why is my Wi-Fi fine on some devices but slow on others?
Different devices may operate on different Wi-Fi standards or frequencies (such as 2.4 GHz vs. 5 GHz), which can affect performance. Some older devices might not support the fastest speeds or could be positioned in areas with weaker signals. We can check your network settings to ensure your devices are connected to the optimal band and help configure your router to prioritise devices that need more bandwidth. Newer mesh technology offers various bands including 2.4, 5 and 6 GHz for less congestion.
Can I boost my Wi-Fi speed without changing my Internet plan?
Yes, you can often improve your Wi-Fi speed without upgrading your Internet plan however if you have a slow speed plan, i.e. 50mb at the router, your wireless speed will be much lower the further away from the router due to interference/walls etc. If you were paying for 500mb you have more speed to play with as you move away from the router. If you're getting 10mb on the slow plan, you might get 100mb on the max speed plan so it's worth upgrading your ISP plan. Further adjusting router settings, reducing interference, using wired connections for certain devices i.e. smart TV, or upgrading to a modern dual-band or tri-band router can all increase your Wi-Fi speed and performance. We can analyse your current setup and suggest changes to optimise your network.
How can I secure my wireless network from intruders?
You can secure your Wi-Fi by enabling WPA2 or 3 encryption (if supported), creating a strong, unique password, and disabling features like WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) that can make your network vulnerable. Passwords that are WEP (numbers only) are easily cracked. We can also recommend setting up a guest network for visitors, so your main network remains protected. Our technicians can help you configure your network for maximum security.
My devices are dropping in and out or can't get an IP address
This is common when using a router that offers dynamic IP addresses via DHCP. We would recommend placing your devices on a static IP address so they retain the same address each time they reconnect. This is especially important for devices that are accessed remotely too such as your security cameras or smart technology such as heatpump. We can assist with setting up reservations for you - this is easy to do yourself with a mesh system.
