Can a regular TV be used outdoors?
Yes and no. A typical indoor TV will not be bright enough and you'll get glare on your screen unless placed in partial sun - i.e. under a pergola or under cover. Some new TVs support 1000-2000 nits which means it's super bright - ultimately what is needed for an outdoor TV. Brands like TCL offer bright TVs at low cost but lack the build quality of Sony or Samsung TVs. Other brands that work well outdoor include OLED TVs but these are expensive.
An indoor TV placed outdoor will need to be protected. A lot of people buy a cheap $50 cover, we don't do this, we use fabricated outdoor TV enclosures which are produced in USA and imported to NZ to protect your TV. The cover comes off and then after-use the cover goes back on ensuring premium protection for year round wild weather. Your TV will be protected to a high standard.
Other options include dedicated outdoor TVs which are built with weatherproof enclosures, anti-glare screens and high nits. These are not cheap but definitely worth it for the very best outdoor TV. Even the remote is waterproof and can be placed in direct sun.
How bright does an outdoor TV need to be?
Outdoor TVs need 700-2500 nits of brightness compared to indoor TVs at 200-400 nits. For shaded areas like covered patios, 700-1000 nits works well - an OLED is usually sufficient. For spaces with direct sunlight or bright ambient light, you'll want 1500+ nits for clear daytime viewing - i.e. a Mini-LED or a dedicated outdoor TV. We assess your specific location's light conditions during consultation to recommend the right brightness level.
Will an outdoor TV work in Kapiti's coastal climate?
Absolutely—when properly specified. Kapiti's salt air, humidity, and weather changes require IP65-rated (or higher) outdoor displays designed for marine environments. We install systems specifically rated for coastal conditions with corrosion-resistant mounting hardware and sealed connections. Our installations routinely handle everything from summer heat to winter storms without issues.
What size TV should I get for my outdoor area?
Outdoor spaces feel larger than indoor rooms, so you'll want to go bigger than you think however for smaller intimate areas or just to keep an eye on the rugby score - a smaller 43" screen is our most popular install. For viewing distances of 3-4 metres, consider 55-65". For 4-6 metres, look at 65-75". For entertainment areas where people gather further back or you'll have an outdoor sofa or cinema style seating, 75-85"+ creates the best experience. We measure your space and typical viewing distances during consultation to recommend the optimal size. For larger areas or with a large wall, a projector is actually better and can be setup a lot cheaper than an outdoor TV.
Can I connect my outdoor TV to Sky, Netflix, and streaming services?
Yes. We integrate your outdoor TV with your home network via hardwired ethernet (preferred) or commercial-grade WiFi. You'll have access to all your streaming services, Sky boxes can be connected by sharing the channel - i.e. multiple TVs watch the same stream and can each change it, gaming consoles, and media devices just like indoors. We can also set up zone-based systems where you control different content in different outdoor areas.
What about sound—do I need outdoor speakers?
Standard TV speakers don't cut it outdoors however smaller intimate setups it definitely does work. Larger areas, sound dissipates quickly. We recommend dedicated outdoor audio systems with weather-resistant speakers strategically positioned for your space. Options range from discrete mounted speakers to full surround sound systems. Soundbars work for smaller covered areas, but open-air spaces benefit from properly designed speaker placement for clear dialogue and immersive audio.
What do I need to install an outdoor TV?
We need power - often a single or double outlet. We also need CAT6 cabling if you plan on running a Sky decoder from your house outside. Other clients can use casting via Sky Go or streaming services such as Netflix or TVNZ so wireless connectivity will need to be high. We'll compare an outdoor access point vs cabling to the TV for the best solution in your project. Kapiti IT can project management the entire install including planning, install, configuration and testing.
Outdoor TV vs Outdoor Project, which one is best?
The answer depends on how you'll use your outdoor entertainment space, but for most Kapiti Coast homes, an outdoor TV in a weatherproof enclosure delivers better overall value and usability.
Outdoor TVs Win For:
Daily Use & Convenience - Turn it on and watch instantly, just like indoors. No setup, no waiting for darkness, no pulling down screens. Perfect for watching the news with breakfast on the deck, afternoon sports, or spontaneous entertainment.
Daytime Viewing - Outdoor TVs with anti-glare enclosures work brilliantly in daylight and bright conditions. You can watch the rugby at 2pm on a Saturday without issue. Projectors are essentially unusable in daylight, even "bright" models—you'll need to wait until dusk or full darkness for acceptable picture quality.
Weather Durability - Enclosures are permanently mounted and sealed against all weather. Rain, wind, salt spray, UV exposure—they handle it all. Leave it up year-round with zero maintenance beyond occasional cleaning.
Picture Quality in Ambient Light - Sharp, bright, consistent images regardless of surrounding lighting. Deck lights, garden lighting, neighbouring properties—none of it affects your viewing experience.
Low Maintenance - Set and forget. No lamp replacements, no calibration, no alignment issues.
Outdoor Projectors Win For:
Massive Screen Sizes - If you want true cinema scale (120"-150"+), projectors deliver larger images than practical TV sizes. Great for movie nights and special events where size matters most.
Lower Initial Cost - Entry-level outdoor projector setups can start around $2,000-$3,000 vs $3,500+ for enclosed TV systems. However, factor in replacement lamps ($200-$500 every 2-4 years) and screens.
Flexibility - Portable projectors can move between locations or be stored when not in use. Good if you only use outdoor entertainment occasionally or want to project in different areas.
The Reality Check:
Most homeowners imagine hosting regular outdoor movie nights, but in practice, outdoor entertainment gets used most for:
Casual daily viewing (breakfast TV, afternoon sports, evening news)
Background entertainment during barbecues and gatherings
Spontaneous "let's watch something" moments or big rugby/cricket games.
All of these favour TVs. Projectors require planning—waiting for darkness, setting up screens, managing ambient light.
Our Recommendation:
For 90% of Kapiti Coast homes wanting regular outdoor entertainment, choose an outdoor TV in a weatherproof enclosure. You'll use it far more often, get better performance in our variable weather, and enjoy hassle-free operation year-round.
Consider a projector if you're specifically creating a dedicated outdoor cinema space used primarily after dark for movies, or if you need massive screen sizes for commercial venues.
The Best of Both Worlds?
Some clients install both—a permanently mounted enclosed TV for daily use and convenience, plus a portable projector setup for special movie nights when they want that big-screen cinema experience. The TV gets used weekly; the projector comes out for special occasions.
